FAQ

So wait, is this a music lesson or like… yoga?

It’s a music lesson! We will learn as much theory, musicality, and technique as you desire. If you are open to it, there are also many thought-and-movement exercises I can teach you to do with and without your instrument that will help your playing ability in many ways. The process does happen to improve yoga abilities, as well, but I won’t be covering that :).

Oh, so it’s meditation?

No, not really that either. Though for students experiencing much pain or anxiety there is a great meditative exercise created by my teacher, which she has authorized me to teach.

Ok, so what is it?

Well, think of it as a music lesson with a little extra “mindfulness.” I as the teacher can help you see what you are doing to yourself that is helpful or not… and guide you in what YOU can do about it! We will still learn as much music theory, musicality, and technique as you desire.

Are you a certified Alexander Technique teacher?

No, I am not a certified Alexander Technique teacher. This means a couple of things: 1) I can offer lessons at a fraction of the cost of a certified teacher, 2) I do not use hands-on methods, and 3) I can focus the lesson on musical instruction while teaching YOU to create better mind-body integration for yourself. If you are looking for a certified Alexander Technique teacher to do a “traditional” progressive series of hands-on chair and table work, you will need to look elsewhere.

Have you studied the Suzuki or Kodaly methods?

I have not studied to become a certified teacher specific to any one method. Instead, I incorporate the many different experiences I have had into a personalized approach for the student. My first teacher was a Japanese certified Suzuki teacher, and the bulk of my private violin training by Japanese, Russian, American, and Chinese teachers continued through Suzuki literature. I continue to do personal research into teaching approaches that I can learn independently and bring to my practice. Some day I may become certified in more, but for now this is the extent that my family responsibilities allow.

Why should I choose you as a teacher?

First off, I think the word “should” is dangerous. I can’t force you to do anything. I can’t make you believe I’m the best thing since sliced bread. I’m not (also, please look into the benefits of genuine sourdough bread, just saying… πŸ˜‰ ). I am a person with a unique perspective and a passion for music, theater, and dance — but especially violin — who has learned through overcoming personal tragedy that just because certain things are commonly taught, does not mean they are taught the RIGHT way. There are many wonderful teachers out there. We all make mistakes. But the best teacher is you. And I can help you become that.

So, you COULD choose me as your teacher. I would love to share a method that has allowed me to bring back a talent and joy I thought was lost to me forever. I would love to share a method that has become another tool in my toolkit for moving through life. I would love to turn you into a Jedi Master. Just kidding, I can’t do that! The choice is up to you, Padowan.
